Michael DePasquale Sr.

1925 - 2006

On September 23, 2006 at 1:30pm Soke Michael DePasquale, Sr. passed away. The world has lost a martial arts legend and pioneer. A loving husband, father and teacher he will be sadly missed by all.

Soke Michael DePasquale, Sr. has studied and trained in the Martial Arts since 1940. He is considered the "Father of American Ju-Jitsu," having founded one of the first Ju-Jitsu schools in the U.S., sanctioned by the Japanese Federation. Soke DePasquale is the Grandmaster of the International Federation Of Ju-Jutsuans (IFOJJ) and holder of the title of Soke. He holds a 10th degree Black Belt in Ju-Jitsu. His knowledge of the art of self-defense is unsurpassed.

Shortly after his induction into the United States Army, at the onset of World War II, the senior Soke DePasquale was trained as a CID (Criminal Investigation Detachment) special agent.  Upon his return to America, Soke DePasquale did two things, which altered the course of both his life, and that of Martial Arts/Law Enforcement history. The first was to join the Long Island Railroad Police, in which he promptly became one of the most decorated law enforcement officials on the East Coast. The second was to bring the art of Ju-Jitsu to the United States as the American representative of the world headquarters of the Hakko Ryu Hombu in Japan.  The Shihan (Master) was also chosen to represent Martial Arts at the 1963 World’s Fair.

After retiring from the Railroad Police, Soke DePasquale served as corporate security director for several large corporations prior to launching his own company called International Protection Systems Inc. As a whole, the company provided the business community of New Jersey with excellent service, including, Investigations, Consulting, and Uniformed Professional Security Officers Service. Soke"D" is a member of many professional organizations including the Fraternal Order of Police, American Society of Law Enforcement Trainers, International Law Enforcement Association, Rockland County Shields and the National Law Enforcement Association. Soke DePasquale Sr. has been recognized as a leading advocate for professionalization through extensive candidate selection and training of the security officer service industry. Soke DePasquale has been profiled in New Jersey Business Magazine, Who's Who in Law Enforcement, the Sunday Herald, and has also been featured on WCBS-TV, and WWOR-TV. He has also been a licensed Private Detective since 1966.

HIGHLIGHTS

Soke DePasquale has been inducted into the International Martial Arts Hall of Fame and has earned innumerable awards in the Martial Arts. Soke DePasquale has been considered one of the top Ju-Jitsu parishioners in the world. He recently attended a Martial Arts exposition in Japan as the guest of honor of the Japanese Federation. Along with his many honors and titles he also holds the title of Professor of Martial Arts.
Soke Michael DePasquale Sr. is in demand as a teacher, worldwide. He continues to travel to all parts of the world teaching self-defense for the average citizen, police defensive tactics to law enforcement agencies, such as the U.S. Marshall Service and the F.B.I., and the most advanced Martial Arts techniques to Black Belts. He is an expert in cane and stick fighting style of Hepi-Ryu.

Soke DePasquale and his wife, Josephine, A 2ND degree karate Black Belt, recently celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary. They reside in River Vale, New Jersey and have four grown sons and one grandchild.

EXPERIENCE

  • Handled diplomatic security during several administrations
  • Played an integral role in the apprehension of several criminal consortiums that had plagued the Long Island Railroad.
  • Founded a Security company that provides security for international corporations
  • Trained several FBI and Law Enforcement personnel

COMMUNICATIONS/MEDIA

Soke DePasquale has a tremendous background in all aspects of communications, especially as concerns Anti-Terrorist instruction and bomb deactivation.  His extensive Counter-Terrorist seminars have added to the knowledge base of Law enforcement operatives throughout the nation. The Soke’s guest shots on his son, Ni Dai Soke Michael DePasquale Jr's anti-crime cable TV show, sponsored by FUMA, further underscored and highlighted his incredible store of wisdom regarding all things security.

Very sad news from Lathen, Germany . . .

It is with heavy hearts that we must inform you that Ernest Lieb and Charles Krum were involved in the high-speed German train crash and did not survive.  Also killed were Mattheas Augustijn, and Dagmar (Daggi) Wichterich who were German A.K.S. students.
Sensei Lieb and Sgt. Krum were to attend a seminar hosted by the A.K.S. in Germany.

LATHEN, Germany - A high-speed magnetic train traveling at nearly 125 mph crashed Friday (September 22nd) in northwestern Germany, killing 23 people in the first fatal wreck involving the high-tech system, officials said.

The train, which runs primarily as a demonstration by its manufacturer, struck a maintenance vehicle that was carrying two workers on the elevated track. Mangled wreckage hung from the 13-foot-high track, with seats and other debris strewn below.

Police put the death toll at 23 after a search of the crash site, about a half-mile from the station at the village of Melstrup. Officials also reported 10 people were injured.

The train runs four days a week on the 20-mile test track between Doerpen and Lathen near the Dutch border. The maintenance car was regularly used to check and clear the elevated tracks of branches and other debris.  The passengers were believed to be employees and their friends and relatives.

Please pray for the families and friends of these dear people.

New Horizon Karate is not just in business to make money but to make a difference in people's lives. Master Alty believes the Martial Arts are about giving back. "Too many schools have taken from the arts and not treated students fairly. School are either brutal or give away belts based on attendance. Neither of these is right" say Master Alty. "The truth is you have to earn your belt and achieve YOUR OWN SUCCESS." It took me 30 years of study and lessons to make it this far.  I still study and take lessons each week.  The martial arts do not start and stop with a punch or a kick.  Learning to achieve and accept success is a beginning and the end.
